Description peterj.huber 2017-04-22 00:26:50 UTC
I run into a problem that seems to be known since it is accurately described in the internet by another user:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/38163033/cannot-run-gsview-on-win-10

as follows:
I'm on Windows 10. 64 bit GhostScript up and running. 64 bit GhostView claims to successfully in stall, and opens the usual window. However, the Window is completely frozen; no interaction is possible, not even closing it. (Version 5.0 of GSView.) I haven't seen this reported as a known problem. Ideas?

GSView v5 is not Artifexes version. Artifex provides GSView 6, from gsview.com.

Artifex GSView is a different product to GSView 5.0, Artifex GSView begins at version 6.0.

GSView versions 5.0 and below were developed and (for commercial licencees) supported by Ghostgum Software Pty in Australia. GPL licenced versions of GSView 5 were supplied without support.

GSView 5.0 was last updated in 2012, long before the release of Windows 10, I can't say I'm surprised that it doesn't work. As a free user, your only recourse is to download the source code for the software, build and debug it. Artifex are unable to help you with this.

Hmm, actually the "free" version of gsview v5 is not under GPL. It is under AFPL, which is a bit more restrictive than GPL. Some open-source purists consider AFPL non-free. FYI.

I had the same or at least similar problem also on Win 10. GSView 5.0 opened as a windows top bar only with no interactions possible. Taskmanager was necessary to kill this instance of GSView. I have a dual-screen configuration with vertical screen order. Once I disconnected the second screen GSView started with no problem and opened the registration "nag" window. While GSView and the nag window open I connected the second screen and ordered GSView and nag on the same screen. From then on GSView opened without problem. I assume the problem is related to the nag window which opened on an invisible part of the screen.

Thanks Ingolf for your comment. I had very much the same problem but with a single monitor. It appeared that GSview 5.0 was frozen, but when I lowered the resolution of the screen the initial registration window became visible and I could proceed. Then I changed the resolution back to the original and everything worked.

I had spent a few days searching for a solution and that was it. It's a pity that GSview (as implemented in v5.0) is no longer updated. For some of the stuff I do it's just perfect, so I'm hanging on to it.
