Using gs to convert the simple.ps file to pdf produces a pdf file with all the characters displayed.

I've only got 10.6.8 here, but I built and tested our release archive of 9.05, and it renders your test file correctly. In truth, if 9.05 were failing with such simple uses as your test file shows, we'd have had a *lot* of a reports on the subject!

I would suggest you contact the MacPorts GS package maintainers (I assume you are using the MacPorts GS package), and let them work out what's different between the source they're using and the source we release. If they can reproduce the problem in *our* release, I can look at it again.

FWIW, there are bugs in Freetype 2.4.9 which mean it can't work with Ghostscript - see:
 see:

https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=35847
https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=35833

and fixes in:

http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freetype/freetype2.git/commit/?id=b43e0f44
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freetype/freetype2.git/commit/?id=9a55cb7a

But I would not expect that bug to manifest in this fashion, so that may not be relevant (it's just it is related to rendering of glyphs).
