Description Nicolas JEAN 2011-03-04 17:58:53 UTC
One of the strengths of Free Software is to provide users with software in their language.
More translations for Ghostscript will in the middle and long term bring more users to try it. FSFE has already asked its translators-team for help on this matter.

Not likely to ever happen. We'll discuss if we want this cluttering up our
bug tracker.

Don't be so pessimistic :).
Henry Stiles was the one to recommend me to write this as an enhancement request rather than anything else.

I have given a link to this bug (as well as to bug 692025) to the translators team of FSFE, maybe we can wait and see if some of them wish to help with translation?

Thanks,
Nicolas

Note that any contribution must allow us to release the work as GPL and the Artifex Commercial License, I assume there is no issue with the former, the latter may be an issue. Please check.

BTW, I assume that this is a documentation effort, not something that would
add multiple languages to the internal source comments and/or messages
produced (mostly error messages). Other than internal error messages, almost
all messages are produced by the PostScript print (=, ==, ===, write) ops,
and PS can't substitute strings when executing these operators.

I wonder what the scope of this bug report is: what documents and what languages? According to wc, there are 1.6M words in all *.htm files from ghostpdl/doc . At a rather low rate of 1¢ per word, the effort by far exceeds the standard bounty. Would any of the official UN languages count?

See comment #2, it seems the original reporter was suggesting that the FOSS community might contribute translations of the documentation or the old Ghostscript web site. As Ray points out there is little in the software that would require translating (some error messages, especially from the PDF interpreter perhaps)

Realistically I do not think we would pay for this (especially not at commercial rates which run at around 18 cents per word for technical content). After 6 years with no further input I think this bug should simply be closed. Its up to Henry though.

Closing (see comment #6).
