The Artifex PCL interpreter fails to properly emulate HP's advance width when rendering fonts of very small point size.
Created attachment 5509 [details] metrictest_public.pcl A test of 79 8 point fonts and a superimposed grid.
Note the test is somewhat confounded by HP's use (at least on the HP 4600) of the small tilde (code point U+02DC) instead of tilde (code point U+007E) for the second to last character in each line. We consider this too "wrong" to emulate, so to use the test to check the spacing of characters disregard the last 2 characters on each line.
Comment #2 should be discarded the tilde characters were incorrect and have been fixed in revision 10206.
At present I don't see a good solution to this problem without radically changing the pcl font rendering machinery. We note the problems are quite minor. This bug will likely be resolved as "WONTFIX".
