Description djtm 2007-11-11 11:24:38 UTC
Version:
Ubuntu Gutsy
Ghostscript 8.61.dfsg.1~svn8187-0ubuntu3.2

Problematic Files:
http://www.bafoeg.bmbf.de/pdf/Vorblatt_07_04.pdf
http://www.bafoeg.bmbf.de/pdf/Fbl1_07_04.pdf
http://www.bafoeg.bmbf.de/pdf/Fbl1_Alg_07_04.pdf
http://www.bafoeg.bmbf.de/pdf/Fbl2_07_04.pdf
http://www.bafoeg.bmbf.de/pdf/Fbl3_07_04.pdf
and others.

printing the PDF with Adobe Reader 8.1.1 in CUPS produces:
D [11/Nov/2007:18:50:51 +0000] [Job 172] GPL Ghostscript SVN PRE-RELEASE 8.61:
Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

It fails to open with: kpdf, kghostview.
Might help:
Although the preview icons are seemingly correctly produced in Dolphin, the
larger preview is not possible. Also Konqueror does not display the preview.
Works in xpdf. When printing as PDF with xpdf over CUPS-pdf the created pdf
can't be opened by programs other than xpdf and acroread neither.

Just a note:
These PDF files are official application forms of the German government "BAFöG-
Amt" and need to be filled out by very many students every semester.
Comment 3 Alex Cherepanov 2007-11-11 16:35:51 UTC
I cannot figure out what is the problem. Ghostscript cannot print the files?
AR8 Cannot open the files created by ESP Ghostscript? The print files
generated by AR8 don't work on Ghostscript?

Everything seems to work for me on Windows. If you have a PS file generated from
the sample files on an Ubuntu box that cannot be printed by Ghostscript - attach
it to the bug report.

PostScript created by Adobe Reader when trying to print

Well, this is the .ps file generated by Adobe Reader. When I try to open it
there's just a blank page or an error.
Comment 5 djtm 2007-11-11 23:32:30 UTC
What version of ghostscript did you use that did not have a problem?
I tried to use http://sourceforge.net/projects/qvpdf/ under Windows yesterday
and had the same problem. When trying to print the PDF to the qvPDF printer,
_one_ blank page came out. (Even when trying to print 4 pages)

I will upload the version Acroread sends to cups as well.
(The other PostScript was created by "print to file".)

/tmp/acroread_1000_1000/AcroZYnky0

This file is created when I print to kprinter and take away the file in
between. Kprinter of course can't process the file either.

Sorry for all the emails. I hope this will help, if not let me know what else I
can do. Thanks!
Comment 11 Marcos H. Woehrmann 2007-11-12 12:49:02 UTC
Ghostscript 8.60 and head (r8359) processes the PDF file referred to in Comment
#1 and the PostScript file referred to in Comment #6 correctly and without error.

What kind of printer are you trying to print to? I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 as
well and have the same Ghostscript installed and don't see any errors when
printing via CUPS from Acrobat Reader 8.1.1. The error message suggests a
configuration issue and not a Ghostscript error. Are you able to print other
PDF files?
Comment 12 Marcos H. Woehrmann 2007-11-12 12:53:42 UTC
I am able to recreate the blank page when printing to cups-pdf:/, but this
happens with every input DPF file, so is likely not a Ghostscript.
Comment 13 djtm 2007-11-12 12:58:16 UTC
My printer is an HP LaserJet 6L with HP driver. I will try it with an open
source driver.
Other PDFs print without a problem. Also PDF to PDF printing works flawlessly
with other PDFs.
How come Kprinter doesn't recognize the PostScript either and also shows a
ghostscript error message(#4)?
Comment 14 djtm 2007-11-17 09:18:46 UTC
Sorry for the late update.

I tried printing with the non-HP opensource driver
HP LaserJet 6L - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.1
Which was not successful either.

The line reads:
Printer Size Pages Status
HP_Open-182 AcrocA9GgK djtm 417k Unknown stopped at

internet files error
Comment 16 Marcos H. Woehrmann 2011-08-15 19:44:00 UTC
I'm not sure what the problem is either.

With Ghostscript 9.04 the original PDF file and the PostScript file created by Adobe Reader are both correctly read by Ghostscript, so either the issued has been fixed or there isn't sufficient information to recreate the problem. Please reopen with a clearer test case if the problem still occurs with Ghostscript 9.04.
